Some plumbing issues can wait for the weekend or a holiday to pass before you have the plumber come out. Then, there are other situations that should prompt an emergency plumbing call. In fact, some issues shouldn't even be put off for the night, should you spot the problem late in the day. You can learn about some issues that can happen to your plumbing that should warrant an immediate call to the emergency plumber. Here are some things you should consider to be a plumbing emergency:
There is a significant leak
Some leaks can wait for a few days for you to have a plumber come out on a non-emergency call. An example of a minor leak is one you can control by turning off the water valve to a certain area that won't put you out too much while you wait or a leak that's in a location and small enough where you can use a can to catch the water for a short period of time. However, more serious leaks should be tended to immediately. Otherwise, they can put out water that can quickly lead to problems like water damage and mold growth. If you find a more serious leak, then you want to put a call out to the emergency plumber right away.
There is a frozen pipe
If the temperature outside has dropped below freezing and you find that you can't get water from one of the faucets, then there is a very good possibility that you have a frozen pipe. If this is the case, then you should call a plumber immediately and let them know you have a frozen pipe, so they come out right away. If the problem isn't tended to quickly enough and in the right way, then you can end up with a burst pipe.
A pipe has burst
A frozen pipe isn't the only thing that can lead to a burst pipe. Some other examples of things that can cause a pipe to burst can include corrosion, tree root damage, soil shifting, and extreme clogs. A burst pipe is a dire emergency that needs to be taken care of immediately to avoid serious water damage to your home and belongings. You should turn off the main water valve right away while you wait for the plumber to arrive, to minimize the damage.
You experience sewage backup in the house
If you're lucky, you can notice the signs of a sewage backup happening early, because the house will start to smell like sewage. At this point, you want to call for an emergency plumber to come out right away. Hopefully, they can catch things before it gets worst. In a worst-case scenario, you would actually have a backup of sewage coming into the house through the drains. Any sign of a sewage backup is a health hazard, and you want the family out of the home until help arrives, so no one is breathing the unhealthy fumes.
